"Vinyl Cutter Etches Music Grooves onto Unwanted CDs"

Aleks Kolkowski has discovered a new use for old CDs: repurposing them into vinyl-style records that can be played on any record player. Attendees of the Manchester Futuresonic 2008 Festival were invited to bring their unwanted CDs and DVDs to his display at the event to have music physically etched onto them by Kolkowski's vintage vinyl cutter. Even better, he apparently let people bring their own WAV files so that they could have whatever song they wanted cut onto the disc.

The resulting CDs are sort of like a DIY version of the vinyl CDs we spotted in November. Drop them onto any turntable that has a 45 RPM speed and these CDs will play a vinyl-ish version of the WAV file. They aren't going to sound as good as high-quality vinyl records, but it's a neat trick.

I've heard more than one person say that they think the future of music formats belongs to digital files and vinyl records. If that's the case, this technique could become a lot more popular.

"Troubled Winehouse 'not ready' for Bond Theme"

LONDON, England (AP) -- Producer Mark Ronson says he and Amy Winehouse have abandoned recording the theme to the latest James Bond film because the singer is not ready to work.

Winehouse is "not ready to record any music," producer Mark Ronson said.

Ronson says the singer is "not ready to record any music." He produced much of Winehouse's Grammy-winning "Back to Black." He made the comments in an interview with Sky News on Friday.

Ronson says the two started work on the track for the upcoming Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" but it would take "some miracle of science" to finish it.

Dance music pioneer remixes 'Nude'

Thomas Dolby has submitted a remix of Radiohead's 'Nude' to the Radiohead remix site.

The producer announced the news on his blog, professing his love for the 'In Rainbows' track - and said it took two sleepless nights to complete.

Dolby named his interpretation 'Bathing In The Ice Floe'.

Writing on his blog, Dolby said: "I love their album and especially 'Nude', so I was intrigued, and I downloaded the guitar stem and opened it in Logic 8 . Now, each of the stems starts from 00:00, so it took a while before the guitar started to play.

"While waiting for it I just listened to the lapping of the waves on the shore, and the cry of some seagulls fighting over a crab shell. By the time the beautiful plaintive guitar part came in I was completely mesmerised.

"It left such a vivid impression on me that this became the basis for a remix, and I recorded a sample of the waves and seagulls and included it in the track. I downloaded the rest of the stems, and after two straight nights with no sleep, the mix is finally finished."

The radioheadremix.com site allows the fans to buy 'stems' of the track and them mix them anyway they like.

The 'stems' available are bass, voice, guitar, strings/fx and drums, while fans can also add their own instrumentation.

When most schoolgirls were playing with their Barbie dolls, Amanda Brooks was dreaming of growing up to be a prostitute.

"When I was in fourth grade, it sounded like a good idea for me. To me it sounded like a really interesting way to make a living and not having to follow other peoples' rules," she said by telephone from Texas where she lives.

Retired at 29 with a steady boyfriend after two-and-a-half years working as an escort, she has published the Internet Escort's Handbook series for aspiring call girls everywhere.

The series so far contains two books. The first book, called "The Foundation" covers "basic mental, emotional and physical considerations in escort work". The second, "Advertizing and Marketing," gives tips on how to set up a Web site and advertize online."When I began working I had a lot of questions and there wasn't really any way to find out answers. I did what they always tell authors to do: I wrote the books that I wished I had been able to read," she said.

Brooks is unapologetic about a lifestyle that she says suited her perfectly. On her Web site she describes her frustration at being told she should get a "real job."

"I've read many job books which list the symptoms to look for when a job is going bad: depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain or weight loss, anger, ulcers, hair loss, hatred, suicidal thoughts, and feeling trapped."

"How did I feel working as an escort? Happy, satisfied, in control of my life; wealthy, healthy, at peace with myself, free, successful and I slept like a baby every night."

Brought up in a small town in Texas, she graduated from college with a double degree in photography and English before getting a job as a cocktail waitress at a strip club. She then worked as a stripper for four years before finally taking the plunge at 26 and placing an ad offering escort services.

At a time when global trafficking and organized crime are making prostitution more dangerous than ever, Brooks said the internet made it easier to go into business on your own -- free from exploitation by agencies, brothel owners or pimps.

The main tip for staying safe is: do your homework. She used the Internet to screen her clients and turned down appointments when she had doubts.

The worst abuse she suffered was clients who refused to pay her fees, which she said were "standard prices in the U.S., between $250 and $500 an hour."

The work became safer once she had a steady stable of regular clients. She found them easier to deal with than her boyfriend.

"Adding money to a sexual relationship does not necessarily make it violent or horrible," she said.

"Relationships with my clients are fun and easy. They were kind of a break from real life and we all know that real life can be difficult."
